Terms of Service

Last Updated: March 29, 2026

Welcome to Plait. These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Plait app and platform, operated by Plait ("Plait," "we," "us," or "our"), a company based in Phoenix, Arizona.

By creating an account or using Plait in any way, you agree to these Terms. Questions? Reach us at hello@plait.app.

Part 1: For Customers

1. Your Account

You must be at least 13 years old to use Plait. By creating an account, you confirm that the information you provide is accurate. You're responsible for keeping your login credentials secure — don't share your password, and notify us immediately if your account is compromised. You may only have one Plait account.

2. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Harass, threaten, or abuse restaurant staff, other diners, or Plait employees
  • Submit fake, misleading, or malicious reviews
  • Attempt to manipulate your Food Critic score or reputation through fraudulent means
  • Use the app to commit fraud (placing orders with no intent to pay, using stolen payment methods, etc.)
  • Interfere with or disrupt the platform, meal sessions, or other users' experiences
  • Use automated tools, bots, or scripts to interact with Plait
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, scrape, or extract data from the platform

3. Meal Sessions

When you join a Meal by scanning a QR code, you become a participant in a live dining session. As a participant, you can browse the menu, add items to your order, and interact with the Meal in real time. You are responsible for items you add to your portion of the order. Meal QR codes are unique per session and rotate periodically — do not share access codes with people who are not physically present at the table.

4. Payment

You agree to pay for all items you order during a Meal. Plait supports several payment methods:

  • Pay in full — one person covers the table
  • Split evenly — divided equally among all Meal participants
  • Split by item — each person pays for what they ordered
  • Cash — you confirm with your server, who closes your portion

Payments are processed by Stripe. Tips are optional and go entirely to the restaurant/staff. Plait does not retain any portion of tips.

5. Reviews

After each Meal, you can leave a review of the restaurant and an anonymous rating of your server. Your reviews must be:

  • Honest. Reviews must reflect your genuine experience.
  • Civil. No hate speech, slurs, personal attacks, or content that demeans individuals based on protected characteristics.
  • Relevant. Reviews should focus on the dining experience — food, service, ambiance.
  • Responsible. Anonymous doesn't mean consequence-free. Abusing the anonymous review system is a violation of these Terms.

6. Photos

Photos you take during Meals and attach to reviews become publicly visible on the restaurant's Plait page. If a restaurant owner adopts your photo (as part of the photo-for-free-meal exchange), it may be used as official content. By posting a photo publicly, you grant Plait and the restaurant a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to display it on the platform. You retain ownership of your photos.

7. Customer Reputation Score

Plait maintains a reputation score for every customer account, built from anonymous ratings submitted by servers after Meals. This score is visible only to restaurant owners — it is not displayed publicly on your profile or visible to other diners. Restaurant owners may use reputation scores to make decisions about service. If you believe your score has been impacted unfairly, contact us at hello@plait.app.

8. Plait Premium ($10/month)

Plait offers an optional Premium subscription at $10 per month.

What you get:

  • Priority service flag (orders highlighted to staff)
  • Priority reservations and waitlist priority
  • Premium badge visible on your profile and to restaurants
  • Additional perks as they're released

Premium is billed monthly with automatic renewal. Cancel anytime from account settings. Refunds are not issued for partial months. 20% of Premium subscription revenue is distributed monthly to participating restaurant owners based on engagement from Premium diners.

9. Your Content and Intellectual Property

You own the content you create — your reviews, photos, and profile content are yours. By posting content on Plait, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicensable license to display, distribute, and promote that content within the platform and in Plait marketing materials. We won't sell your content or license it to third parties outside the platform without your consent.

11. Your Responsibilities as a Restaurant Owner

  • Keep your information accurate. Menu items, prices, hours, and location must be up to date.
  • Use customer data appropriately. Data may only be used to improve your restaurant's service within Plait — not for external marketing or data brokering.
  • Treat customers fairly. Use Plait's tools to create better dining experiences, not to discriminate.
  • Follow the law. Ensure your use of Plait complies with applicable food service regulations, employment laws, and anti-discrimination statutes.

12. Employee Management

When you add employees to your Plait restaurant account, you're responsible for ensuring each employee understands and complies with these Terms, any actions taken by your staff within the platform, and revoking access promptly when an employee leaves your organization. Plait is not responsible for actions taken by your employees on the platform.

13. Customer Blocking

Plait allows restaurant owners to block low-reputation customers from making reservations or joining Meals. You may not use this feature to discriminate against customers based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, or any other protected characteristic. Blocking decisions must be based on legitimate service concerns. Misuse of the blocking feature is grounds for immediate suspension of your Plait account.

14. Photo-for-Free-Meal Exchange

Restaurant owners can adopt customer-submitted meal photos for use on their digital menu. When you adopt a photo, the customer's meal is comped (credited back). Adoption is entirely voluntary and only applies to photos the customer has already made public. You may not use private or non-public photos.

15. Data You Receive

As a restaurant owner, you have access to customer dining preferences, order history at your restaurant, waiter performance ratings (aggregated and anonymous), and customer reputation scores. You do not receive customer names linked to anonymous reviews, data from other restaurants, or individual identities behind reputation scores.

All customer data you access through Plait must be kept confidential and used only for restaurant operations within the platform.

16. Payment Processing

Restaurant payments are processed through Stripe Connect. By enabling in-app payments, you agree to Stripe's Connected Account Agreement. Plait charges a transaction fee on in-app payments — the current rate is disclosed in your owner dashboard and may be updated with 30 days' notice.

17. Your Menu Content

The menu content you create — item names, descriptions, prices, photos — is yours. By uploading it to Plait, you grant us a license to display it to customers on the platform. Plait's platform design, interface, analytics tools, AI features, and branding are ours. You may not replicate, reverse-engineer, or use our platform design outside of Plait.

Part 3: General Terms

18. Service Availability

We work hard to keep Plait running smoothly, but we don't guarantee 100% uptime. Scheduled maintenance, unexpected outages, and third-party service issues (Firebase, Stripe, etc.) can affect availability. We're not liable for losses caused by temporary service interruptions.

19. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Plait is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of the platform. Our total liability for any claim will not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid to Plait in the 12 months prior to the claim or (b) $100.

20. Dispute Resolution

We'd rather work things out. Before filing any formal claim, please contact us at hello@plait.app.

Binding Arbitration. If we can't resolve it informally, any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms will be settled by binding individual arbitration administered by the AAA under its Consumer Arbitration Rules. The arbitration will take place in Phoenix, Arizona, or remotely if both parties agree.

No Class Actions. You agree to resolve disputes individually. You waive the right to participate in class action lawsuits or class-wide arbitration against Plait.

21. Termination

You may close your account at any time from your account settings. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms, your actions create legal risk for Plait, or we're required to do so by law. Upon termination, your access to Plait features ends. Data deletion follows our Privacy Policy.

22. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Arizona, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any legal proceedings not subject to arbitration will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Maricopa County, Arizona.

23. Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, that provision will be modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it enforceable, and the remaining provisions will stay in full effect.

24. Entire Agreement

These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Plait regarding your use of the platform. They supersede any prior agreements or understandings, written or oral.

25. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms as the platform evolves. We'll notify you of material changes via email or in-app notification at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use of Plait after the effective date means you accept the updated Terms.
